As colder weather arrives, the Warm Home Discount is one of the most useful schemes for households trying to manage winter energy costs. For the 2026/27 winter, eligible customers can receive a £150 credit towards their electricity bill. But the way eligibility is checked, and whether you need to take action, can depend on where you live and your circumstances.

What exactly is the discount?

The Warm Home Discount is not a cash payment sent to everyone. It is usually a one-off £150 reduction applied by a participating energy supplier to an eligible customer's electricity account. Some suppliers may allow the credit to be used against gas where the household buys both fuels from the same company.

The scheme is separate from other forms of winter help, including the Winter Fuel Payment and supplier hardship funds. Receiving one type of assistance does not necessarily mean you qualify for every other scheme.

Who might qualify?

Eligibility is linked to the scheme's rules and qualifying benefit or household circumstances. Many eligible customers receive the discount automatically after their details are checked. However, not every household receiving a benefit will qualify, and rules differ between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which has separate energy arrangements.

It is worth checking that your electricity account is in the correct name and that your supplier has accurate details. The qualifying date for the 2026/27 scheme has already passed, so changing an account now may not fix an eligibility issue for this winter. If you recently moved home or changed supplier, check the official guidance before assuming your discount will transfer.

When should the money arrive?

Eligible customers are generally expected to see the £150 credit applied by 31 March 2027. That means it may not appear immediately when the heating goes on. If you think you qualify but have not received any communication, look for official guidance about whether you need to contact the scheme's helpline or your supplier.

Be cautious about messages asking you to click an unfamiliar link or enter bank details to claim the discount. Because it is usually applied as a bill credit, unexpected demands for payment or sensitive information should be treated as suspicious. Use your supplier's official website or government guidance instead.

What else can help with winter bills?

If you do not qualify, ask your energy supplier whether it offers a hardship fund, affordable repayment plan or practical support. Comparing tariffs can also help, although a cheaper-looking fixed deal should be assessed against exit fees and your actual consumption.

Small household changes may reduce wasted energy, but the biggest priority is keeping your home safely warm. If money is tight, seek advice early rather than waiting for arrears to grow. Citizens Advice and recognised debt charities can explain options without requiring you to pay for help.
