Halloween 2026: Seven Easy Ways to Make a Cosy Night In Feel Special

Not heading out for Halloween this year? You can still make 31 October feel like an occasion without buying a costume, booking tickets or spending a fortune. A few thoughtful touches can turn an ordinary Friday night into a properly atmospheric evening at home.
1. Give your living room a Halloween glow
Switch off the main lights and use warm lamps, battery-powered candles or fairy lights instead. Add a pumpkin or two and you have an instant seasonal setting. If you're carving a real pumpkin, place it on a tray to keep the mess under control.
2. Make the snacks part of the fun
A bowl of popcorn is a good start, but try giving your snacks a theme. Arrange crisps, sweets, sliced fruit and mini sandwiches on one sharing board. For a quick treat, dip strawberries in melted chocolate and let them set in the fridge.
3. Pick the right kind of scary film
Not everyone wants jump scares. Decide whether the evening calls for a family-friendly adventure, a funny supernatural comedy or a genuinely unsettling horror film. Choosing the mood before you start scrolling is often half the battle.
4. Try a no-pressure costume challenge
Give everyone ten minutes to create a look using clothes and accessories they already own. Think mysterious detective, friendly ghost or eccentric vampire. It works particularly well if you're spending the evening with friends or older children.
5. Put your phones away for one hour
Set a short phone-free window for the film, a board game or a spooky storytelling session. It helps the evening feel different from a normal night on the sofa, and nobody needs an elaborate plan.
6. Make a mini Halloween playlist
Start with playful, familiar tracks and move towards moodier instrumentals later in the evening. Keep the volume low enough for conversation. Music can make even a simple dinner feel like a party.
7. Finish with something comforting
After the scary stuff, wind down with hot chocolate, tea or a favourite sitcom. If children are involved, choose the activities and viewing carefully for their ages and comfort levels.
A good Halloween doesn't need a big budget
Whether you're staying in by choice or skipping the crowds, the best Halloween plans are the ones that suit the people you're with. Choose two or three ideas from this list, keep it relaxed and enjoy the atmosphere.
